I flew out to Austin, Texas to meet up with the Austin Longboard Club and check out the local longboard scene. My efforts were thwarted by the terrential downpour that occurred all weekend. This group of guys meet every Sunday at 2 PM at Wahoo’s Fish Tacos on Rio Grande Street and skate or drive to whatever hill, parking garage, or basin they decide to take on that day. These guys have an amazing network, bulletin board, and forum to discuss all things longboard. Membership is free, and you can see what the group plans to take on that weekend by visiting the forum. You can also find maps of all the great longboard spots if you would like to test them out on your own. The group is very welcoming, so check them out if you are ever near Austin, or I would highly reccommend if you are planning a skate weekend.
Since longboarding was not in the cards for my weekend, I spent most of the days at Rudy’s BBQ stuffing my face with extra-moist brisket, pork-loin ribs, cream corn, banana pudding, and sweet tea. This is a must for all visiting Austin!
Austin is also the live music capital of the US and has one of the best night-life’s, so be sure and check out 6th Street in downtown after dark.
